  • Sound of Metal (Performance Video)  Quicktime

Scene in which drummer Ruben tells Deaf culturist Joe that he has sold off all his possessions in order to afford an auditory surgery. He denies Deaf culture, he denies Joe's wisdom, and instead attempts to grasp at some semblance of control over his life as he clings to his hearing. Upset/Standing up for oneself/Suicidal/Mental Health/Depressed/Patient/Cornered/Friend Even without this context, this monologue captures much of the desperation, dejection, and gloom that someone experiences after realizing that their efforts in life seem futile, with failure acting as a constant barrier to joy.
